Backup SaaS – An Onsite Computer Perspective

May 29, 2009

Hopefully, every Microsoft client of Onsite Computer Services in New Orleans fully internalizes the importance of back-up and off-site storage of their important company data.  Onsite is adept at backup and recovery in disaster situations with extensive experience in the restoration of voluminous amounts of company data and systems following Katrina.  One of the many lessons from Katrina, the bottom line in a system restore is a good recovery is only as good as the backup.
Backups at small businesses are generally on SBS 2003 or SBS 2008Onsite Computer has clients who hold a specific employee accountable for either a successful backup, which they physically carry to their home at night, or a call to Onsite to determine why the backup failed.
Onsite is aware of the present world economic climate; however for those with the IT budget Onsite Computer recommends remote or offsite backup as a possible cost effective alternative to traditional physical backups, especially if your business resides in a flood zone (i.e. 80% of New Orleans).  Following Katrina, many firms realized the importance of off-premise storage at a location outside of hurricane flood zones.  However most in New Orleans reside in a flood zone. One feature of remote or offsite backup is the elimination of material media which must be physically transported and stored in a separate, safe location.
Online backup is simply another example of Software as a Service (SaaS) in the cloud using your Internet connection.  With ubiquitous high-speed Internet, online backup and restoration is easier and faster than in the past and can be used as an alternative or in addition to traditional methods such as magnetic tapes, CD-ROMs, DVDs and external hard drivesOnline backup services easily accommodate off-premise storage requirements at distant locations; however there are other pros and cons to SaaS backup.
Online backup is not a cost effective alternative backup strategy for every organization. Charges for SaaS backup are determined by size.  A reliable, fast Internet connection is imperative. If there is an Internet failure, a successful online backup or restoration is impossible.
Online backups eliminate the expense of local backup hardware, and the need to physically transport and store the backup to a safe remote location. If you choose online backup you’ll be entrusting your valuable data to an external provider for safe storage.
Contact Onsite Computer for the full story about online backups.  Onsite recommends SaaS backup for our business clients – not only those who reside in flood zones, but also those who desire a cost-effective, safe backup strategy.
