Onsite Computer Services and Windows 7’s Release and Pricing

May 18, 2009

Onsite Computer Services in New Orleans is regularly confronted by Microsoft business clients with questions regarding Windows 7. Microsoft leaked rumors early last week by revealing that its Windows 7 operating system should be in stores for Christmas ’09.  Some contend the final version of Vista’s successor will be publically available in mid October, 2009.

Interest in Windows 7 is greater than previous Microsoft operating system  releases, and many contend prices of the Windows 7 operating systems are expected to be elevated from Vista and XP pricing.  Microsoft has thus far remained tight-lipped in regards to Windows 7 pricing, but it appears Redmond’s flagship operating system comes with increases in price over Vista.  It will be interesting to see if increased pricing for Windows 7 during our present economic contraction will stifle adaptation of Vista’s successor.

For businesses considering the migration to Windows 7, not only is there an increase in hardware and software costs for the Windows 7 desktop operating system, but also there is the added expense of hardware and software for a Windows Server 2008 RC to consider in evaluating a potential migration. Last week the WSJ reported IT managers of Fortune 500 companies are starting to increase technology budgets in anticipation of an improving economic environment.  It will be interesting to see if small businesses follow suit with the increased budgets required for migration to Windows7 / Server 2008 RC.

Stay tuned as Onsite Computer Services in New Orleans continues our dissection and discussion of features and benefits we discover in our lab version of Windows 7 RC.
