Windows Vista and Outlook 2007 in a Windows SBS 2003 Network

March 24, 2009

As an increasing number of Microsoft business clients of Onsite Computer Services in New Orleans purchase Vista PCs with Outlook 2007 for use in their Small Business Server 2003 / XP Professional networks, we are regularly called to help with successful transition requirements.  Microsoft provides a plethora of information to aid in the successful integration of new Vista PCs into existing SBS 2003 business networks; however many Microsoft business users experience difficulty successfully completing the task.

One of the biggest problems is confusion with the selection of Vista versions that are compatible with an existing SBS 2003 network.  The only versions of Vista that can successfully operate with SBS 2003 are Business, Ultimate, and EnterpriseWindows Vista Home editions do not support business networking or Remote Desktop, and have limited features as a non-domain joined client computerMicrosoft does NOT recommend that you use the home versions of Vista as client computers within the Windows SBS local network.

Microsoft publishes an Update for Windows Small Business Server 2003:  Windows Vista and Outlook 2007 compatibility (KB926505).  In addition, Microsoft publishes a document to aid in the update of your SBS 2003, called SBSVista_Conceptual.doc.  Before you purchase your new Vista PC or begin the update process, PLEASE read the document.

The update document can inspire a migraine.  Most Onsite clients read a portion of the update document and discover a professional is required.  The update process performs several compatibility updates to the SBS 2003 / Vista configuration.  Potentially, there are more than a few other downloads that may be required, in addition to numerous manual configuration changes.  If you attempt the update to accommodate Vista for business in your network and you discover you’re stuck, call Onsite today to successfully remedy the situation.
