President Obama and Google

February 5, 2009

On Wednesday, Microsoft Business clients of Onsite Computer Services in New Orleans were abuzz with chatter in response to a Wall Street Journal article that elucidates a relationship between President Obama and Google’s Eric SchmidtMr. Schmidt, who campaigned for Mr. Obama before the election, and the President share the belief that technology can improve both government and business.

Google and President Obama are not strangers. According to campaign disclosures, Google employees are the fourth-largest source of corporate campaign contributions for President Obama. Google also allowed executives to take leaves of absence to help Mr. Obama with transition policy planning. In an apparent effort to dispel any notion of quid pro quo, Mr. President has ensured that the transition volunteers “… are recused for one year from contracts with agencies and departments about particular matters over which they had substantial responsibility.” Some may ask what happens after year one?

Following the election, Mr. Schmidt and 15 Google executives additionally gave $166,000 to fund the Obama inauguration bash. Last week at a meeting of chief executives discussing stimulus with Mr. Obama, Mr. Schmidt was seated adjacent to the President. Many maintain Mr. Schmidt was never as close to Mr. Bush or Mr. Clinton.

Based on Google’s actions before and after the election, some may contend that Google might be one of the technology companies benefiting from a billion dollar stimulus package for information technology. A White House transition team spokesman maintains Google was simply one of several interest groups, academics, and corporate executives offering opinions about stimulus. It will be interesting to note Google’s role in the proposed technology stimulus plan.
