Digital Rights Management – An Onsite Experience

December 17, 2008

Onsite Computer Services in New Orleans has a Microsoft business client who loves music, and always purchased his music from MSN and Yahoo to name a few vendors. Out of his respect for the ethical implications of copyrighted material, this client paid for the digital rights to play a vast collection of music. Yesterday, the hard drive on this client’s PC crashed requiring a new drive and reinstallation of his operating system, his applications, and his music.
DRM has changed.

After a little research Onsite discovered Yahoo’s DRM (digital rights management) servers no longer exist; however MSN DRM servers will operate until 2011. Yahoo provides their users a credit for downloads at Rhapsody’s DRM-free store. If you are one of many who purchased DRM-crippled music, check with your music vendor if you must reinstall your music. The reasonable thing to expect is fair compensation with refunds or credits for DRM-free downloads. What do you think?
