Microsoft Small Business Server 2008 and Onsite Computer Services in New Orleans

December 3, 2008

Yesterday, Onsite Computer Services in New Orleans visited an existing Microsoft Server 2000 customer with twenty-five users.  The business owner is considering a new server and a migration to Microsoft Server 2008; however a close examination of his existing system revealed another alternative – migrate his existing data to a new server running Small Business Server 2008.

Upon Onsite Computer’s suggestion of SBS 2008, the business owner cringed as he apparently had several reservations about using the Microsoft Small Business Server product.  After a few probing questions, Onsite Computer Services unveiled the business owner’s objections to the SBS products.
The owner was of the common misinformed opinion that Windows SBS is a scaled-down version of the Windows Server products and uses scaled-down versions of the application his organization uses most: Exchange.  Sometimes it’s difficult to appreciate just how much big-business technology is packed into a small-business product. Customers often ask if Microsoft scaled down the server applications in SBS in order to sell the product at a cheaper price.
Upon further discussion, Onsite Computer assured the client Windows SBS does not contain limited versions of the server products and Windows SBS is not a “lite” version of the Windows Server product line.  We assured the client the Windows SBS is not a server version with missing or disabled components, in fact the SBS product is a cost-effective alternative to Server 2008 and Exchange for his twenty-five employees.
We assured the client SBS contains the complete product technologies – Exchange Server, SharePoint Services, Windows Server Update Services – and these technologies are closely integrated in the SBS product. In addition, Windows SBS is pre-configured for smaller sized businesses, with unique management and monitoring tools added. Onsite Computer Services assured the client SBS is the best value on the market and the best opportunity for customers seeking a new server or the right-sized server for their business.

Does your business have fewer than 75 users?  Is your business in need of a cost-effective server solution that offers enterprise capabilities?  Contact Onsite Computer Services today to get the whole story on Microsoft SBS and your business.
