Microsoft Replaces Windows Live OneCare with Free “Morrow”

December 1, 2008

Onsite Computer Services in New Orleans is saddened by the news of Microsoft discontinuing its Windows Live OneCare as of June 30, 2009.  Microsoft’s decision leaves PC users with fewer choices for ongoing security protection.  Fewer choices imply less competition and less competition is not good for consumers.  Apparently, OneCare failed to attract profitable market share away from security giants like Symantec and McAfee.

OneCare’s exit is not the end of Microsoft’s consumer security business.  Microsoft plans to release “Morro”, a free, anti-malware product.  Morro is specifically designed to use negligible computing resources, especially in environments with little bandwidth and less powerful PCs.  Morro’s release is planned for the second half of 2009.

According to Microsoft marketing research, consumers need wide-ranging protection from new and existing malware threats.  The no-cost Morro is especially needed in markets where the growth of malware exceeds the growth of new PC purchases.  Morrow will offer malware protection for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.  Direct sales of Microsoft OneCare will discontinue when Morro becomes available as a free download.
