Microsoft Vista and Windows 7 in Small Businesses

November 13, 2008

At Onsite Computer Services in New Orleans we have a reputation for successfully serving the needs of the Microsoft small business client.  Generally, these clients look to Onsite Computer Services for advice regarding hardware and software solutions to improve the operational efficiency and productivity of their businesses.  Onsite is a Microsoft Partner and we KNOW the source of our billable hours – we are proud to service Microsoft products; however Onsite Computer Services is often the object of derision in our role as ambassadors of Microsoft, especially since the release of Vista.

Most people accept change, and its associated pain, if the change leads to increases in productivity.  Business computer users are no exception, especially when new software improves productivity with computer tasks.  Some Microsoft business clients regularly lament that Vista is much slower than XP on identical hardware.  Many contend PC productivity with Vista is not an improvement over XP, and virtually every task in a business environment with Vista can be accomplished with XP.

Onsite Computer Services in New Orleans subscribes to the teachings of the eminent and scholarly William Barnett, PhD, an Austrian economist on the faculty of the School of Business at Loyola University. In the immortal words of Dr. Barnett, “Isn’t it a wonderful thing that in a free, capitalistic society we have the liberty to choose.”  Imagine if everyone was forced to run Vista in the management of their businesses.

The release of Vista did increase billable hours for Onsite Computer Services; however the increase in billable hours is due to client requests for removal of Vista and installation of XP as new business PCs are acquired.  Consumers vote with their pocketbooks, and business consumers are voting for XP.  Hopefully, the successor to Vista, Windows 7,  will offer clear, identifiable features and benefits that provide immediate increases in computer productivity to justify the painful learning curve associated with change for the average business PC user.
