SBS 2008’s Wizards – “… easier than ever to install!”

November 12, 2008

As Microsoft Partners dedicated to servicing the IT needs of small businesses, Onsite Computer Services in New Orleans often encounters the DIY (Do It Yourself) business owner. SBS 2008 is marketed as being “… easier than ever to install and configure” with four SIMPLE pages in the Setup Wizard; however technical expertise and experience with SBS does simplify a cost-effective and timely migration from SBS 2003 to SBS 2008.

Last week, Onsite Computer Services encountered a DIY business owner attempting to ‘upgrade’ his existing SBS 2003 to SBS 2008. The business owner was unaware SBS 2008 is a 64-bit product and does not offer the option to upgrade from SBS 2003. Onsite Computer Services introduced the term ‘migration’ and our client responded with a confused, blank stare. We explained a migration SIMPLY involves installing a new SBS 2008 box, moving the data from the SBS 2003 to the SBS 2008, and removing the SBS 2003 box. The business owner paid our bill and exclaimed he would ‘think about it.’

Yesterday, after five days of pain and suffering, the DIY business owner called for Onsite assistance in completing his SBS 2003 to SBS 2008 migration. Apparently the Microsoft marketing promise of wizards to simplify SBS migrations is working as our client actually attempted the task. Claims that a new SBS 2008 can be up and running in as little as thirty minutes may be true for someone with SBS experience; albeit our client, a dentist, and a techie from a local computer shop capitulated after unsuccessfully running wizards for a week. They did not know they did not know. Scary.

Unfortunately for our client, Microsoft’s wizards cannot foresee every contingency. The wizards do aid in the successful migration from SBS 2003 to SBS 2008; however given the plethora of situations that can arise, significant SBS expertise can be required for an efficient and cost-effective migration. Given enough time and research our client, a bright dentist, probably could have completed a successful migration. After watching Onsite Computer Services in New Orleans successfully complete the SBS migration, our client confessed he should have initially hired a professional for such an involved procedure.

When you need a root canal and you desire the least pain and aggravation, you don’t Google ‘root canal’ and start drilling. You call a specialist. The same idea applies when performing a server migration from SBS 2003 to SBS 2008 – call a specialist. In economics the truism is called ‘comparative advantage.’
