Microsoft Windows Azure and Partners

October 31, 2008

As Microsoft Partners, Onsite Computer Services in New Orleans takes great interest in developing SaaS technologies at Microsoft. According to the Microsoft Azure web site, Azure, the new SaaS platform from the software titan will ship in the second half of 2009. Pricing for the SaaS service will be based on client usage.

Microsoft’s efforts to compete in the cloud are not a surprise. Microsoft is already offering cloud services SharePoint, Exchange, and Office Communications Server Online for large-scale organizations. However Microsoft’s plan to move its entire Windows enterprise software portfolio into the cloud displays a commitment to change the notion of Windows as a purely desktop application.

Azure allows Microsoft Partners to enter the SaaS arena with an enterprise offering; however there are several other facets like service-level agreements, technical sales, marketing, support, billing, and hand-tailored customization that are unclear but critical to winning business clients to the cloud. Additionally, many question the security of an all Windows Cloud and the threats posed by hackers and a plethora of malware.

Many contend at this juncture the partner role in the Microsoft cloud remains unclear. One thing is certain as Microsoft’s SaaS continues to evolve; it will be interesting to see the future role of partners as SaaS salesmen in the evolving Microsoft cloud business model.
