Changing PCs from Microsoft Windows XP to Vista

October 20, 2008

Today I received a question from a New Orleans Microsoft client of Onsite Computer Services regarding how to best prepare for switching PCs from Microsoft Windows XP to Vista, with the least aggravation.  Onsite Computer Services in New Orleans has a checklist to consider when upgrading our clients to new software and systems.

For users changing from XP to Vista, Onsite Computer Services in New Orleans advises the following:

If possible, setup the Vista PC and investigate the new operating system.

Examine any new programs you’ll require like the Office 2007 suite: Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.

Organize and perform ‘house-cleaning’ with your important data files on the XP PC, and backup.

Record your Internet connection settings.

Record your network settings.

Export your web browser bookmarks.

Export your Outlook or Outlook Express contacts, email, and mail account settings.

Transfer data to the Vista PC.

Configure your network and Internet connection.

Import your bookmarks into your web browser.

Import your Outlook or Outlook Express contacts, email, and mail accounts.

Information on how to perform each of the steps is an easy Google.  Based on years of experience, the above procedure should eliminate the majority of SNAFUS you’ll encounter during the change.  If possible, store the old XP PC for a few weeks until you’re certain you have EVERYTHING of importance on the Vista PC.  In a following post, Onsite Computer Services in New Orleans will discuss how to permanently delete personal data on your old XP PC.
