Microsoft Extends XP’s Life – an Onsite Computer Services Perspective

October 7, 2008

Microsoft business clients of Onsite Computer Services in New Orleans are abuzz with news of Microsoft’s third extension of the life of Windows XP – the popularity and demand for the seven-year old operating system is forcing the Microsoft extension of XP’s life until July 31, 2009.  Some contend XP’s extension will coincide with the release of Windows 7, allowing users to skip the intermediate Vista upgrade.

Onsite feels this change in Microsoft’s XP policy is prudent, given the uncertainty in our economy at this point.  Every small business client of Onsite Computer Services is faced with the tremendous economic uncertainty and IT budgets for the short term do not provide for system upgrades.  Some contend the extent of the present economic contraction is extraordinary and no one knows when the contraction will end.

Based on clients of Onsite Computer Services, one might conclude the average age of business PCs and servers presently in use is increasing.  Much to the chagrin of Microsoft, the life cycle of their software is also increasing.  Businesses are facing an economic climate of unprecedented uncertainty where the life of every business asset, including software, is extended.

Microsoft realizes the economy is affecting everyone’s decision process and the potential for Vista business upgrades during the next twelve months is not bright.  Consider Microsoft’s present marketing campaign.  There is little mention of Vista as the latest advertisement from Microsoft seems to only promote the Windows brand.  Some contend the most recent Microsoft advertisement is further evidence that Microsoft is reducing promotion of the Vista brand.  What do you think?
