Microsoft’s New Marketing Strategy – SearchPerks

October 2, 2008

As most small businesses striving to earn profits during economic contractions, Onsite Computer Services in New Orleans takes interest in new marketing strategies, especially innovative ideas from entrepreneurial titans like Microsoft.  In its search engine war with Google, Microsoft not only offers Live Search Cash Back for purchasing products through its search engine, but also now offers SearchPerks for using Microsoft Live products and services.  SearchPerks are like complicated ‘Green Stamps’ which promise future rewards for present customer loyalty.

With SearchPerks ‘rewards’ like a DRM-protected song for 150 searches (approximate reward of $0.0067 per search), or a SearchPerk T-shirt for 1100 searches (approximate reward of $0.0045 per search), some may contend the SearchPerks benefits are insignificant motivation to change their search habits.  Considering the SearchPerk prizes, some might question the percentage of Google users who will enroll in SearchPerks, change from Google to Live Search, follow ALL of the SearchPerk rules, and ever redeem a point?

Some Onsite Computer Services clients derive great humor in this strategy.  You might care to read this Computer World article for more of the particulars.  After reading the rules, one might question the efficacy of such a program.  Similar marketing campaigns expect 2% of total perks are redeemed.  The cost of SearchPerks to Microsoft is obviously negligible.  One might question if the return of SearchPerks to Micosoft will also be negligible.
