Malware Scams and Onsite Computer Services in New Orleans

September 30, 2008

New Orleans Microsoft business clients of Onsite Computer Services are regularly bombarded with malware that sends misleading messages designed to scare them into purchasing software to repair computer problems that don’t exist.

Yesterday, Washington State’s Attorney General Rob McKenna’s office accuses James Reed McCreary IV of The Woodlands, Texas, and two of his companies, Branch Software and Alpha Red, of ‘marketing’ a software package called Registry Cleaner XPRegistry Cleaner XP markets itself by sending end users messages falsely claiming their PCs have corrupted or damaged registry settings that must be repaired immediately. The software sells for $40.

Microsoft referred the case to McKenna’s office and has been helpful in assisting the attorney general’s consumer protection unit to enforce laws against scare ware dealers. Over the past three years, Microsoft has brought 17 lawsuits under Washington’s Computer Spyware Act and the state’s attorney general has filed seven.

According to a September 29th, 2008 post in The Register, by Dan Goodin of San Francisco, “The prevalence of so-called scareware has reached epidemic proportions. Programs frequently mimic real security features within the Windows operating system to fool people into believing their PC has been infected with malware. In many cases, it’s just about impossible to remove the software once it’s been installed.”

At the time of this post, Mr. McCreary and his Registry Cleaner XP, ( continues to offer ‘free’ registry scans.  Onsite Computer Services in New Orleans REGULARLY cautions our New Orleans Microsoft clients if the offer is for ANYTHING ‘free’, then run, don’t walk.  There is NO free lunch.
