Paulson’s Bailout and Small Business Clients of Onsite Computer Services

September 29, 2008

At Onsite Computer Services in New Orleans the primary topic du jour among our Microsoft business clients is Henry Paulson’s proposed $700 BILLION bailout for financial firms.  Paulson alleges the credit markets are fragile and frozen.  His plan involves the federal government (i.e. taxpayers) purchase of complex securities to avoid ‘economic meltdown.’

Every student of Austrian economics studies the teachings of Joseph Schumpeter, an economist from Austria considered by some as the father of modern economic thought.  One of Schumpeter’s beliefs is that government control over the economy carries the danger of out of control inflation and economic disaster.  Many contend government intervention in the free, capitalistic process always impedes economic progress, and complicate financial problems.

Microsoft Business clients of Onsite are typical small business owners – they had a idea, took a risk, and formed a business.  A free, capitalistic society gives everyone the opportunity to form a business; however owning a business does not guarantee profits and success, and MOST every business owner is faced with the potential for loss and failure.  Many are of the opinion that Mr. Paulson’s bailout of those businesses considered ‘too big to fail’ is not in keeping with the idea of the free market and the capitalistic equation.

Many believe the threat of business failure via poor business decisions or investments is a reality of entrepreneurship.  The right to fail should be a reality of ALL businesses.  Some contend Paulson’s bailout essentially eliminates the right to fail for some at the expense of taxpayers, promoting the concept of ‘moral hazard.

Every business client of Onsite Computer Services in New Orleans believes all businesses should carefully consider the possibility of failure in making business decisions and investments.  If a business makes bad decisions or investments, that business should be allowed to fail.  In the words of one Onsite client, “… let the chips fall where they may!”

Does anyone believe Paulson’s bailout is a PROFITABLE move for taxpayers?
