Manage Your Growing Data “Monster”

September 25, 2008

One of the Microsoft business clients of Onsite Computer Services in New Orleans is a plastic surgeon whose growing practice involves storing voluminous amounts of patient information, including huge quantities of digital images.  As every entrepreneur knows a growing business is also faced with increasing expenses, and this includes IT expenses.  One of the fastest growing IT expenses is associated with data storage and backup.

Onsite Computer was called to devise a plan to manage the exponential growth of data storage at the client’s practice.  Their total amount of data associated with patient records is now >2 terabytes and is expensive to store online and backup on a daily basis.  Our client desires to store patient records for a maximum of seven years and the majority of the information is rarely accessed after 12 months.

Onsite’s plan is to evaluate data by age and general significanceData that is accessed on a daily or regular basis is stored on their server’s primary ‘online’ disk storage and is backed-up on a daily basis.  Data that is occasionally accessed and is not subject to changes is stored on DVD for ‘near line’ storage.  Old and rarely accessed data is archived and stored on tape or other offline storage.

By segmenting the client’s data by age and general significance, Onsite greatly reduced the client’s growing of online data ‘monster’ and its storage and backup expense.  If your online data ‘monster’ is growing and an efficient, cost-effective data management strategy is required, call Onsite.
