Hurricane Gustav and New Orleans

August 31, 2008

As the Louisiana Gulf Coast evacuates in anticipation of the arrival of Hurricane Gustav, Onsite Computer Services in New Orleans is completing storm preparations with our Microsoft business clients. Onsite’s disaster recovery services were overloaded following Hurricane Katrina, and based on the projected path and strength of Hurricane Gustav, Onsite’s experienced hurricane disaster recovery team anticipates a busy revival period.

Now is the calm before the storm. With the exception of a slight breeze, everything is very still. The streets are empty as the news media and local officials provided ample inspiration for residents to evacuate. Yesterday the news media interviewed an evacuee regarding the hot conditions in the evacuation line boarding trains for Memphis. The evacuee, sporting a Polo shirt and several gold chains replied, “… it’s mo’ betta’ than sittin’ on your roof!”

Following Hurricane Katrina, some critiqued the local and state government’s preparation and response. It is interesting to note that in the face of Hurricane Gustav all levels of government are quite fervent in their call to evacuate. Most residents are heeding the Gustav warnings as the Interstate Highway escape routes leading away from the area are grid-locked or closed in some areas. Some contend traffic is flowing, albeit at 10 miles per hour.

I wish we could report on a mundane problem with computers; however preparation for Gustav requires our time. Onsite is in the metro New Orleans area and is on-call through out the duration of Gustav. We hope to continue to post to our blog, electricity permitting.
