Vociferous Google SAAS Users Reply to Onsite

August 11, 2008

Onsite Computer Services in New Orleans received several emails from unhappy Google SAAS users in response to our preceding post regarding Google’s SAAS outage. Most contend the 15-hour loss of access to Google’s SAAS is unacceptable.

Thank goodness that in a free, capitalistic society we all have the liberty to choose. Based on a simple calculation, a loss of 15-hours of access to Google amounts to 0.00171703 of down-time per year, or 99.828297% up-time per year.

Considering the plethora of possible problems that prevent successful Internet navigation, most users would be happy with such stats. In addition to the internal failure points at Google, many users are unaware of the failure points beyond Google’s control: Internet snafus, ISP connectivity issues, local area network connectivity, and user PC problems. Although SAAS is relatively new, service level agreements (SLAs) which provide service up-time guarantees from SAAS providers only cover problems within direct control of the service provider.

At this early stage in the SAAS industry, NO ONE can offer SLAs that guarantee 100% up-time. In Onsite’s opinion, if you’re considering SAAS for your company, evaluate the provider’s SLA guarantees. As the SAAS industry grows, SAAS providers will increase redundancy in their systems and the reliability of their services will increase; however, always consider the potential problems that may impede a user’s connectivity that are not covered by SLAs.

SAAS is a great cost-effective concept for many businesses, but it is not perfect. If you’re considering SAAS for your company, contact Onsite for ALL of the particulars and several service offerings.
