Vista’s Successor – Microsoft ‘Mojave?’

July 24, 2008

An Onsite Computer client visiting San Francisco last week attended a Microsoft road show aimed at staunch Microsoft XP users who loathe the thought of installing Vista.  The purpose of the show was to introduce XP users to a ‘new’ operating system code-named ‘Mojave.’

Although the demo was not exactly a ‘double-blind’ study, some scientific method was utilized.  Attendees were initially asked a series of questions about Vista (i.e. personal experience and initial impressions), and their interviews were videoed.

Following their initial video interview, attendees viewed the demo of the ‘new’ operating system, ‘Mojave.’  After the demo, attendees were queried regarding their impressions of the ‘new’ system.  According to Onsite’s client, the vast majority (>90%) of the XP-ites voiced approval for Mojave.  Much to the surprise of the staunch XP users, ‘Mojave’ was really Vista.

Although the XP-ites are not a representative sample of business users, the XP-ites at the Mojave demo did provide evidence that Vista is misunderstood by certain market segments.  The Mojave demo is a small part of the new marketing initiative designed to introduce the ‘new’ Vista to the overall market and encourage sales of the maligned Vista.

In June, 1100 IT managers were queried regarding their plans to integrate Vista by King ResearchSixty percent of the managers do not plan to integrate Vista and this number is an increase of 7% from similar research conducted in November 2007.  Furthermore, >90% of those IT managers claim Service Pack 1 has not changed their opinions of Vista.

It will be interesting to note Microsoft’s new Vista marketing strategy as it develops in the coming months.  Microsoft addressed some Vista concerns of small business with the Assurance Program and free telephone support.  The ‘Mojave’ demo was targeted at the consumer market.  The problem market niche is corporate users and their decaying perceptions of Vista.  Stay tuned as the Vista saga continues.

  1. Microsoft is the only company in the world that can afford having major upgrades of their OS at will, simply because they hold a huge percentage of the market share world wide. lets wait to see what Microsoft “Mojave” is all about.
