June 13, 2008

Onsite clients in New Orleans are abuzz with chatter about the Yahoo Google joint venture of June 12.  After ending negotiations with Microsoft, Yahoo claims the Google deal could increase Yahoo revenue by $800 million per year.  According to industry insiders, Google will serve ads alongside Yahoo search results.  Due to Google’s increased earnings for search queries, Yahoo’s outsourcing of some of its operations to Google should increase Yahoo’s revenues.

With Yahoo’s declaration of ending talks with Microsoft, Yahoo shares initially fell 10%Microsoft’s announcement that they are no longer pursuing a Yahoo deal increased Microsoft’s share price by 4%Yang, co-founder of Yahoo, claims outsourcing to Google should reverse Yahoo’s declining business growth.  Some analysts contend advertisers will simply move their advertising business from Yahoo to Google.  It will be interesting to see if the Yahoo outsourcing plan is profitable – if the top two search engine giants receive regulatory approval.  Yahoo shares fell an additional 5% today to $22.46/share – well below the $35/share offered by Microsoft

Competition in any industry is wonderful for consumers and fosters innovation.  Competition is the driving force behind entrepreneurship.  Some may say a merger between the top two competitors in any industry does not promote competition.  It will be interesting to note how the regulatory bodies in Washington view such a merger.  Stay tuned as the battle for search engine supremacy and advertising revenue continues in a free, capitalistic society .
