Microsoft Extends XP Home and Onsite Computer in New Orleans

June 4, 2008

Although yesterday’s policy change comes as no surprise to Onsite Computer in New Orleans, officials at Microsoft changed their plans to end the life of XP during this summer.  In the face of mounting opposition from low-cost desktop manufacturers, Microsoft decided to extend the life of XP Home until June 2010 for certain classes of both laptops and desktops.   The processors in these lower-cost PCs would never support Vista, and Microsoft decided to reverse their policy of ending XP‘s sale to all but low cost laptops sold in third-world countries.

Some may contend the change in policy for low-cost machines is a moot issue.  However, Microsoft claims that in response to consumer requests, XP’s life is extended to June 2010.  Furthermore, Microsoft claims that if future consumer demands require an additional extension, XP’s life cycle will extend past the June 2010 date.  Microsoft originally planned to stop sales of XP in June of this year.
