Onsite Computer and Microsoft Small Business Server Backup

June 2, 2008

Yesterday a prospective Onsite Computer client who uses a Microsoft SBS system called with a disaster recovery problem – the boot drive in his system crashed.  The client’s server incorporates a mirrored drive configuration and a nightly tape backup in an effort to protect his data, accounting information, and his Exchange / Outlookinformation store.  Based on an initial examination the client’s system seemed prepared for the simple recovery of his boot drive; however as we discussed his problem, additional information was revealed.

Generally small business clients attempt all sorts of remedies, including booting the server to death, before they contact a professional.  Onsite realizes the economy is on the brink of recession and small businesses must minimize their expenses; however after a few attempts at reviving the server, a professional with experience in disaster recovery should be called.

The client’s only soluton to revive his server was reboot.  When Onsite examined his SBS 2003 the situation was grave.  The secondary mirrored drive failed to boot and a closer examination revealed data corruption.  This happens and in preparation for such contingencies a tape backupof important data is a generally accepted practice.  We prepared the server for a recovery of his tape backup and much to our client’s chagrin, the restoration of his tapes proved impossible.  Upon questioning, the client claimed he purchased the ten DLT tapes in 2003.

Tapes and drives have a finite life.  Check the manufacturer’s specs regarding the average life of the component and replace when it reaches the end of its life cycle.  Disaster recovery doesn’t have to be a disaster.  Onsite has pulled many servers and their data from the flames of disaster with experience and care.
