Onsite Computer Comments on Microsoft vs. Google

May 22, 2008

At Onsite Computer we believe competition, especially between giants like Microsoft and Google, is wonderful for the consumer. Yesterday, Microsoft unveiled its latest strategy in the battle for search engine superiority with GoogleMicrosoft plans to pay web shoppers to use its search engine by offering rebates on purchases made through Live Search.  Thus far 700 merchants, including Home Depot, have agreed to participate by listing products in the program.

Bill Gates contends the cash rebate program will change the ‘pay per click’  to a ‘pay per purchase’ model.  Microsoft hopes to increase search engine market share by returning money to purchasers who use Live Search.  IDC research analysts predict that if the initial Microsoft efforts are successful, then an increasing number of advertisers will devote the bulk of their advertising budgets to Microsoft’s rebate idea.  For the full story visit MSNBC.

Some may contend this latest Microsoft offering is simply another way to purchase search engine market share. It will be interesting to see the results from this effort.
