New Orleans Onsite Computer and Microsoft XP SP3

May 20, 2008

Yesterday, Onsite Computer began applying Microsoft XP SP3 on a client’s systems in New Orleans.  Following the experience of prior installs, the only incompatible issue we experienced arose when SP3 was installed with Microsoft Dynamics.  We assumed the newest client to receive the SP3 update would be a snap; however we were wrong.

The newest client to receive XP SP3 has generic Dell and HP PCs.  The HP PCs, unfortunately, are running AMDprocessors.  Upon completion of the SP3 installation, the HP PC entered into an endless reboot scenario.  We Googled the problem and discovered a blog by Jesper Johansson that explains the HP/AMD snafu.

HP has a patch available for download that addresses the incompatibility; however the patch must be applied before SP3Microsoft has a Technet article describing the removal of SP3.  This snafu is not a huge issue, unless you’re the client and we’re billing by the hour.
