Onsite Computer and Microsoft Vista SP1 in New Orleans Businesses

April 29, 2008

As a Microsoft Partner – Registered Member, Onsite Computer Services in New Orleans just installed the latest edition of Microsoft Vista with Service Pack 1 for businesses. We installed Vista on a new PC in a test environment with Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 R2. According to Microsoft Technet, “… SP1 contains changes focused on addressing specific reliability and performance issues, supporting new types of hardware, and adding support for several emerging standards. Windows Vista SP1 also addresses some management, deployment, and support challenges.”

There are a plethora of issues addressed in Vista SP1 – We offer our opinions based on a few days of experience in a test environment. Of immediate notice was the availability of driver support for the new hardware in the Vista installation. Additionally, the frequent crashes associated with Windows Media Player and Windows Calendar seem remedied. We also noticed the PC readily awoke from sleep mode. Printing concerns experienced during Terminal Services sessions were fixed with our HP printer. File sharing issues in the initial Vista release were apparently addressed in Service Pack 1. Remember, these are initial opinions and we’re operating in a test environment without third-party applications like accounting software.

Stay tuned for more feedback as we continue our torture test of Vista SP1. Today we plan to continue our testing with Vista SP1 and domain integration with Microsoft Small Business Server 2003, R2.
