Onsite Computer New Orleans and Apple vs. Microsoft

April 27, 2008

Last week an Onsite Computer client in New Orleans, whose business runs only Microsoft products, inquired about an Apple Mac for his home.  The client’s office system is flawless.  Onsite’s mantra has always been ‘… if its not broke, don’t fix it.’  Although the client has never owned a Mac, Apple marketing efforts are at work in his mind.

There are market driven-companies and there are marketing-driven companies.  Apple is a marketing-driven company and their marketing is slick.  Apple caters to the descriminating user in the upper market segment of PC users.  Apple does not produce products for mass market appeal.  Comparing an Apple to a Microsoft PC is similar to comparing a Lexus to a Chevrolet.  Both products will take you to your destination; however Apple marketing contends you’d be happier with a Mac.

A quick Google of Apple’s market share shows their global market share for the quarter ending on March 31, 2008, is 3.3% of the 70 million PCs shipped during that time.  Apple’s share of the market is growing.  Last year during the first quarter, Apple’s market share was 2.5%.  Apple is celebrating.  In my humble opinion, isn’t it a wonderful thing, that in a free, capitalistic society, we have the liberty to choose.
