Microsoft’s Software Update – Comment from Onsite Computer Services, New Orleans

April 20, 2008

Many of the Microsoft Windows Server, XP and Vista users On Site Computer Services encounters are not aware of the importance of Microsoft’s software update services. Most are unaware that their Microsoft Windows Server, XP or Vista based PC are constantly communicating with Microsoft update. As Microsoft releases new critical security updates, these updates are automatically downloaded to network connected PCs; however some of these updates are not installed automatically.

Upon downloading Microsoft software updates, Microsoft Server, XP and Vista based computers indicate the download by a small yellow shield in the lower right of the computer desktop task bar. A simple mouse click on the yellow shield will install the Microsoft software updates. Most Microsoft based users ignore the shield and are unaware of its significance.

A March 31, 2008 article by Elizabeth Montalbano, , in PC World magazine highlights the importance of such an update. According to the article: “Windows Search 4.0 is now available at the Microsoft Download Center. The update is for Microsoft’s desktop search that allows users to search for various kinds of files — such as documents, photos and the like — stored anywhere on the PC.

According to a post on Microsoft’s Windows Vista Team blog, Windows Search 4.0 fixes most of the bugs “causing a majority of distractions” for Vista users, and also improves query response time by 33 percent over the original RTM (release to manufacturing) version of Vista. For IT professionals, the update improves the performance of indexing information from Microsoft’s Exchange Server when it’s online, and also extends and improves support for Group Policy settings, according to Microsoft.”

We installed this software update on several of the clients of On-Site Computer Services and are impressed with this enhancement provided by the Microsoft update service. We encourage Microsoft Windows Server, Small Business Server, XP and Vista users to verify the installation of this important update on their Microsoft systems.
