Windows 7 Beta and Unexpected Reboots
July 1, 2009
This morning a Microsoft business client of Onsite Computer Services in New Orleans emailed for help with his Windows 7 Beta PC. His Windows 7 Beta PC seems to reboot unexpectedly every couple of hours without warning. The reboot is by design and is simply Microsoft’s effort to entice users to upgrade. Microsoft warned that Windows 7 Beta will completely stop and expire on August 1.
Users running Windows 7 Beta can continue to use the new operating system without the unexpected reboots by visiting the Microsoft 7 web site, downloading and installing the Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC). The Windows 7 RC was made available for download in early May and will be accessible until Aug. 15.
There are two paths to the Windows 7 RC upgrade: a clean install or an upgrade installation requiring registry modifications as per Microsoft instructions. Before you begin any plans to install Windows 7 RC, Onsite Computer strongly advises users to backup any important data. A clean install repartitions and formats a hard disk, removing all existing information. Modifying the registry has its own special set of considerations and as the Microsoft disclaimer suggests, “amending the registry can cause serious problems if you modify the registry incorrectly.”
If you find chasing the Windows 7 RC option distasteful and prefer to wait until the October 22 release of the final version, then a clean install of either Windows Vista or XP are other options. Regardless of your choice of operating system or installation method, Onsite strongly advises a backup of important data BEFORE you begin your journey.
